Cheryl Spencer, Certified Gardener

Hi! I’m Cheryl.

Do you dream of a garden that looks good all year, but doesn’t take over your life?

I know that sounds impossible, but If you want to create the garden of your dreams, and aren’t sure how to do it, you’re in the right place. Over the past 20+ years, I’ve nailed down strategies that keep my garden growing like a well-oiled machine. So I started Simply Smart Gardening to help other gardeners like you get the same results. I’ll share everything I know with you, especially the things I wish I knew when I was starting out. Whether you want to grow a few plants in pots, create a new garden, redesign an existing garden, or learn how to garden in a challenging environment I’ll inspire you to do something fantastic.

I’m a home gardener just like you.

If you’re interested in my adventures as a new gardener, and how I got to where I am today you can read more about me and my story.

My mission is simple – I’m here to help you grow your best garden ever.

Most new readers come to Simply Smart Gardening with a dream garden in mind, but also with a few common needs or challenges. I can help you create the garden of your dreams, even if:

  • It’s your first garden.
  • It’s hard to fit gardening into your busy schedule.
  • It’s tough to garden where you are (like the arid west, or at high altitude).

New gardeners

Beginners can feel overwhelmed by all of the information out there and can be led astray by myths and old wive’s tales that seem to spread like wildfire on the internet. At Simply Smart Gardening you’ll get the science-based know-how you need to succeed in your garden. If you’re new to gardening visit my Gardening 101 page.

Experienced gardeners

After you’ve been gardening for a while you can get discouraged when life gets in the way of gardening. Before you know it, your garden is overrun by weeds and a bit out of control (I know, because I’ve been there). If you want to up your game, visit my Pro Gardening Tips page.

Gardeners in dry climates

Gardening in the arid west or at high altitude (like I do in Colorado) can be difficult. But my garden proves that it’s not impossible to grow a  fabulous garden in a tough climate. If you’re a new gardener in the Western US, visit my Dry Climate Gardening page.

What you can expect from me

I spend a lot of time thoroughly researching the articles I write. But if you see a mistake, or have better information, please let me know. I strive to be accurate, and I’m always ready to learn something new.

About 90% of the information you’ll find here applies to most gardens that are in USDA zones 4 through 6 or 7. The other 10% applies to specifically to Colorado and the arid Western U.S. I’ll always let you know when an article or piece of information applies to these arid, Western areas, and will give you information relevant to your zone when needed.

I have a few guiding principles

  1. Keep it simple.
  2. Garden smart not hard.
  3. Make it beautiful.

1. Keep it Simple

The gardening techniques I share with you are always simple. Simple doesn’t always mean easy. But  strive to make things as uncomplicated as possible for you.

2. Garden smart not hard

I rely on facts and scientific research, not the old wives’ tales and myths that spread online like a virus and never seem to die. And I can help you be a more organized gardener too! One of my superpowers is planning. I’m a spreadsheet enthusiast and have lots of ways to help you plan and track what goes on in your garden.

3. Make it beautiful

The projects and DIY that I write about are always useful and aim to bring beauty to your garden as well.

Together you and I can change the world, one garden at a time!
